Student Affairs Committee will not recommend 5th-grade sex-ed materials and declines MiPHY participation

The Fruitport Community Schools Student Affairs Committee reviewed sex-education materials provided to the Board by the Sex Education Advisory Board (SEAB) and discussed the MiPHY student survey at its Feb. 2 meeting. Committee members expressed a preference for beginning sex-education instruction at the middle school level and said they would not recommend approval of the presented 5th-grade materials as presented.
Committee minutes also record that members discussed and expressed a desire not to participate in administration of the MiPHY survey. The discussion is recorded in the committee minutes; no formal motion, roll-call vote, or named mover/second appears in the minutes provided.
The committee’s positions will be recorded in the meeting minutes and may be considered when the Board of Education reviews SEAB materials and related policy at a later date. The minutes were respectfully submitted by Jason Kennedy, Superintendent.
