Fruitport committee previews educator compensation LOA under Section 27l; board action expected in February

At a Feb. 2 Business and Finance Committee meeting, staff reported unions agreed to delay bargaining over Section 27l(2) until summer after the district received FY2026 state revenue intended to improve educator pay; a draft LOA was shared and may go to the full board in February.
The Fruitport Community Schools Business and Finance Committee on Feb. 2 reviewed a draft Letter of Agreement related to educator compensation under Section 27l and was told the board may be asked to act on the agreement at the district’s February board meeting.
Mark Mesbergen, Director of Business Services, told the committee that the district and the unions or associations have agreed to delay bargaining over Section 27l(2) until this summer. He said the district received state revenue in the FY2026 budget intended to improve educator compensation.
Mesbergen shared a draft Letter of Agreement on compensation with committee members and said that if the union(s) approve the LOA this week, the Board would be asked to take action during its February meeting. No formal motion or vote was recorded at the committee meeting.
Committee attendance was recorded as Kris Cole, Dave Hazekamp, Jason Kennedy, JB Meeuwenberg and Jessica Wiseman. The committee held no public comment and adjourned at 5:27 p.m.
Next steps: the LOA and any related bargaining schedule would be considered by the full Board at its upcoming February meeting, per Mesbergen.
