Council amends school budget ordinance to cap millage at 110 mills

Oconee County Council on May 20 amended Ordinance 2025-02 to set the school millage cap at 110 mills and approved the School District of Oconee County budget on second reading.
Chairman Matthew Durham read a statement from SDOC Superintendent Dr. Michael Thorsland, which was filed in the meeting backup. Durham then moved, seconded by John Elliott, to amend Ordinance 2025-02 to read "110 mills" in place of "108.6"; County Attorney David Root clarified the amended language would read, "A tax of sufficient millage, not to exceed 110 mills." The amendment passed 4–0, and the ordinance was approved 4–0 on second reading.
Councilmembers thanked district leadership for collaborative work on the FY2025–26 SDOC budget; no public comments were received during the ordinance’s public hearing earlier in the meeting.
