Florence seeks state municipal-aid grant to repave Hamilton Avenue; trails grant also planned

Florence Township staff told council on June 10 that municipal-aid grant applications are open and that Hamilton Avenue is a strong candidate for paving because it functions as an arterial/collector street. Administrator Thomas A. Sahol said the township evaluates streets based on condition, rideability, stormwater issues and ADA ramp compliance; while some smaller streets have worse surfaces, they typically do not qualify for state roadway grants.
"Hamilton Avenue is one of those streets. It would rank high on an application and it does need paving so this is our preference this year," Sahol said. He explained that the application language will indicate the segment extent is subject to grant allocation and that the township may pursue additional phases in subsequent years.
Sahol also noted staff will reapply for trails or recreation grants to connect an open parking lot near Second Avenue and Riverside Avenue to the dog park at Roebling Park; a resolution authorizing the Hamilton Avenue application and any trails application will be presented for council action next week. Council Representative Talaya Loftin asked about Green Acres funding recently announced at the state level; Sahol said he will review potential eligible projects.
Next steps: staff will present resolutions authorizing the grant applications for formal council approval.
