District midyear data: reading shows steady gains, math recovery slower; absenteeism flagged

At the board’s midyear review, Dr. Dicki presented assessment results and progress since pre-pandemic measures. "We have gained approximately five percentage points each year after year since we've returned to full learning," she said for ELA, while noting math has not fully rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. She outlined the district’s use of I-Ready diagnostics and projections for SC Ready: current reading projections at about 76% meets/exceeds and math projections near 64%.
Dicki reported winter I-Ready diagnostics showing 60% of students reading at tier one and 53% in math, and she stressed use of the guaranteed viable curriculum (GBC) plus learner-centered practices to accelerate growth. "Their growth is a result of not isolated interventions, but rather the intentional delivery of high-quality core instruction that benefits all learners," she said when describing individual student progress.
She also summarized end-of-course pass-rate snapshots and the state’s new high-school on-track metric: ninth-grade on-track is 95.3% and second-year on-track is 97.9%. Chronic absenteeism improved from pandemic-era levels but remains an area of focus. Trustees asked questions about alignment between new state math standards and I-Ready; Dicki replied that I-Ready is nationally normed and can be used to predict SC Ready performance by aligning item types to state standards.
Why it matters: These midyear metrics guide staffing, curriculum pacing and targeted interventions for spring. Trustees agreed staff will continue to dig into level-two/level-one student data to identify instructional pushes needed to move students to proficiency.
What’s next: District leaders said they will continue data analysis through spring and bring recommendations for any additional instructional supports or targeted courses that may be required next year.
