UN to lead inaugural global dialogue on AI governance as scientific panel readies report

The United Nations announced it will host the inaugural session of the global dialogue on artificial intelligence governance in Geneva, with the Secretary-General attending to open discussions among governments, civil society and other stakeholders.
Spokesperson Steph said the global digital compact adopted at the 2024 Summit of the Future established the dialogue and called for inclusive governance of AI. The same General Assembly resolution created the International Scientific Panel on AI; the panel’s co-chairs, Yoshua Benjjo and Maria Resa, will present a preliminary report to member states during the Geneva meetings.
The Secretary-General plans bilateral meetings with leaders and stakeholders participating in Geneva Digital Week, which the UN described as a cluster of events including the World Summit on the Information Society and the AI for Good summit convened by the ITU and UN partners. “The global dialogue on AI governance is giving every country a seat at the table,” the spokesperson said, summarizing the Secretary‑General’s message that multilateral engagement is essential as AI systems reshape societies.
UN officials emphasized that the dialogue aims to build common approaches rather than prescribe a single model. The International Scientific Panel on AI will provide scientific and technical input to inform those policy discussions, and member states were urged to review the panel’s preliminary report and engage in bilateral consultations.
The conversations in Geneva are expected to continue through the week as the Secretary‑General returns to New York the following Tuesday to report on outcomes and next steps.
