Northfield Energy Committee asks Select Board for support to pursue new grant and school upgrades

The Energy Committee asked the Northfield Select Board on April 28 to back a new Green Communities grant application and to support planning work that would prepare the elementary school for heat-pump upgrades.
Judy Wagner, co-chair of the Energy Committee, introduced committee members and described the group’s ongoing work to reduce municipal energy usage and pursue grant funding. Seth Hansell said Northfield became a Green Community in 2017 and reported the town has achieved an estimated 20% reduction in energy use, supported by nearly $700,000 in grant funds invested primarily at the elementary school. The committee also noted LED lighting and mini-split installations at town buildings.
Jim Van Natta, the other committee co-chair, said the next grant would focus on incremental upgrades to the elementary school’s ventilation system, reducing reliance on a failing pneumatic heating-control system and positioning the building for a later shift to heat pumps to cut fossil-fuel use and improve comfort. The committee said an earlier grant effort missed an April deadline because the expeditor lacked sufficient data and that it plans to reapply in the fall.
Spirit Joseph and Seth Hansell proposed identifying municipal sites for solar generation, evaluating LED streetlighting, and organizing a comprehensive building assessment and engineering study to open additional grant opportunities. The committee asked the Select Board to provide leadership and to consider municipal matching funds where required to leverage larger grants.
The board did not take immediate action on funding commitments at the meeting; the committee said it is recruiting additional members with technical and mechanical expertise to support upcoming projects.
