Town staff gave infrastructure updates near the end of the April 21 meeting: the Highway 36 well contractor is mobilizing and a camera test is scheduled that will take roughly three to five days and produce a recommendation for repairs; the wastewater treatment plant contractor remains on schedule and startup is expected in the coming weeks.
Public works staff also said the town will repaint the interior and exterior of the water storage tower and that AT&T is installing a temporary antenna to maintain service during sandblasting and repainting.
Fire-department representatives provided a construction update on the new station (substantial completion targeted for Oct. 31) and described a plan to install a Safe Haven baby box. Officials said Louisiana law now allows such boxes; the town has raised several thousand dollars and is seeking roughly $16,000 more to purchase and install the unit. The department said the box alerts dispatch and locks once a baby is placed to ensure a rapid response.
Town staff also reminded the public of upcoming community events: a neighborhood —Love the Boot— planting event and a Keep Abita Beautiful cleanup with volunteers, including local Girl Scouts.
No formal votes were taken on infrastructure items at the April 21 session; staff said contractors are mobilizing and will provide schedules and reports to the council as projects proceed.
