Abbeville council approves hires, transfers, infrastructure payments and a sewer rehab project

Council members moved and approved the hire of Mr. Dumonte Dober, described in council remarks as a post-certified academy graduate and resident of Youngsville, after staff said references were positive. The council did not record roll-call tallies in the transcript; votes were taken by voice.
The council adopted a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute an interlocal agreement transferring a surplus fire-prevention trailer to the city of Brussard. Staff said the trailer had been acquired through a previous grant and Brussard had requested it.
On infrastructure and procurement items, council approved a $5,299.20 quote from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories to replace a control panel at the bypass electrical substation, and approved partial payment No. 2 for $52,688.72 to LAN Construction for the FY2023 LCDBG clearance phase one project. Council also approved a special-event permit for St. Mary/Vermilion Community Action Agency to hold a Vermilion Head Start recruitment parade.
The council approved a public-works sewer rehabilitation project for the Felicity and Dutale Streets area (the agenda initially listed Slesinger in error). Public works director Chris Gotro told the council the city will manage the project with a contractor, add a manhole on Dutale Street, and expects no interruption of service or cost to customers.
Chief Doris told the council the fire department plans to recruit part-time firefighters to fill vacancies and to supplement staffing during disasters; full-time hiring will follow, with a training academy expected in August and hiring actions targeted in March or April.
The council also announced the February 17, 2026 meeting will be cancelled because it falls on the Mardi Gras holiday. Several councilmembers gave brief community updates including an events schedule for "Sounds on the Square."
