Abbeville council adopts 2026 budget, amends 2025 after public hearing

The Abbeville City Council held a public hearing Dec. 16 and voted to adopt the city’s 2026 budget and amend the 2025 budget, after department heads asked technical questions about line items and capital purchases.
The public hearing included questions from the police chief about the lease and equipment costs for four replacement police vehicles and the timing for outfitting them. Finance staff identified the vehicle lease in the general fund (line 411-267/412-267) and confirmed capital-outlay lines that would cover outfitting, with one vehicle’s equipment planned for 2025 and the remaining three for 2026.
Council members urged conservative spending next year. "All the department heads are going to need to support the mayor and her efforts to be conservative next year so we can be in line with what the budget says," one council member said. Another thanked the budget committee and staff for weeks and months of preparation.
Following the hearing and brief discussion, the council voted to close the hearing, move to adopt the ordinance to approve the 2026 budget and amend the 2025 budget, and carried the motion without recorded opposition.
The council also approved routine consent items that night, including ratification of bills paid in November and approval of meeting minutes and the November budget-to-action report.
