Kewanee council approves $241,043.59 in bills; staff answers questions on batteries, bike rack and mulch

The Kewanee City Council voted 5–0 to approve bills totaling $241,043.59 on a motion by Council Member Chris Colomer, seconded by Council Member Steve Faber.
Council Member Colomer asked about a UPS battery purchase; Grounds Maintenance Manager Newton said the batteries serve the uninterruptible power supply for the 911 room, are tested twice a year and needed replacement. Council Member Yaklich questioned the process for purchasing a downtown bike rack; Newton said the funds were budgeted for fiscal year 2019 and the rack matches the theme of existing downtown planters and benches. Newton also explained that a replacement door at the transfer station was required after springs broke and the door became a safety hazard. At Council Member Yaklich's request, Newton said mulch purchases were for Veteran’s Park and downtown and were purchased at the end of the previous calendar year to prepare for spring. Operations Manager Johnson confirmed the salt purchase was scheduled and the salt shed was currently full.
Council discussion also included a contract with Bock, Inc., and routine reports from Finance and Administration. The consent agenda (including payroll and minutes) was approved earlier in the meeting. No amendments to these items were made during the session.
