“I want to say this has been confirmed by the chief and also confirmed by Abbeville General Hospital that we had five fentanyl deaths in the city of Abbeville last year,” Councilman Brousard said. He urged the community to “get behind Chief Mike” and the sheriff as they work to address the issue and asked members to consider steps to protect children and first responders.
Council members expressed concern for first responders’ exposure, public safety and the need for coordinated enforcement and prevention. No new ordinance or funding was adopted at the meeting; council members asked staff and law enforcement to continue collaborative work with regional partners and hospital stakeholders.
The discussion underscored both the human toll and the operational strain on emergency personnel; council members called for further coordination and monitoring of overdose trends.
