The Town of Westborough Public Library launched its summer reading program June 13 with the theme "Plant a Seed, Read," and staff told trustees June 24 that the program uses a single metric for all ages: days when a participant reads at least 20 minutes.
The director said staff visited most local schools for outreach and planned to have library staff available before the town fireworks to sign up families and hand out small items to encourage participation. "We've been kind of making our way around trying to get people signed up," the director said.
Caitlyn Staples, technology and collections librarian, described the family-focused design: parents can model reading behaviors and receive recognition as participants. Prize thresholds were described as five days to earn a prize (children receive a bead; adults receive a raffle ticket; teens receive a scratch ticket and a chance at additional prizes), and staff reported early redemptions, indicating early engagement.
Trustees were asked to help promote the program as staff continue outreach through summer events and school contacts.
