Council approves alley vacation, demolition contract and purchase of used garbage trucks

The City Council on Jan. 14 approved three measures affecting property, public works and city equipment.
Ordinance #3953, vacating an alley in the East Tenth Street parking lot, passed on a motion by Council Member Chris Colomer, seconded by Council Member Steve Faber, with a 5-0 roll-call vote. Jon DeBord explained the vacation would allow electric, phone and data lines to be routed through the alley to a second building on the site.
The council also awarded Resolution #5138 to Dana Construction for demolition of the house at 830 Florence Street and the garage at 829 Florence Street. That award passed on a motion by Colomer, seconded by Faber, by a 5-0 roll-call vote.
Resolution #5139 authorizing the purchase of two used automated garbage trucks from the City of Normal passed on a motion by Colomer, seconded by Michael Yaklich, by the same unanimous tally. The Operations Manager confirmed that any employees no longer needed for curbside collection would be reassigned to other departments.
Earlier in the meeting the council approved bills totaling $286,435.91 and a routine consent agenda including payroll and departmental reports; both votes were unanimous. Council Member Michael Yaklich questioned the municipal benefit of the work performed by Jacob & Klein and the Economic Development Group; City Manager Bradley responded that the attorneys assisted businesses with duties related to TIF zones.
All votes recorded at the meeting were 5 ayes, no nays. The council reconvened after an executive session and completed the evening’s business before adjourning at 7:44 p.m.
