The RSU 23 board discussed student health and safety measures and completed a policy first reading at its Jan. 13 meeting.
Peter Flaherty, a member of the Policy Committee, read the first reading of Wellness policy JL and Concussion policy JJIL to the board. The minutes record the first reading but do not show a vote or adoption; follow-up action is expected in a future meeting according to routine policy-review practice.
The Emergency/Safety Committee reported that fire drills and lockdown drills have been reviewed and schools have submitted the required paperwork; about half of the drills required for the year had been completed. The committee noted off-site evacuation planning will be addressed at the next meeting and discussed providing CPR training for staff and coaches. The committee also recorded receipt of a grant for the '5210' program.
Old Orchard Beach High School updates included a kickoff for schools and college accreditation work, midterm exams beginning, and plans to administer the Maine Integrated Health Youth Survey on Feb. 6 (letters to be mailed to families). The high school is planning a Coffee with the Principal event on Jan. 21 and exploring an expansion of Camp Kieve after internal staff discussions.
Minutes show no contentious exchanges on these items; the policy reading and safety updates were presented for board information and future action.
