New Bremen tables purchase of new Pierce rescue apparatus, approves emergency reimbursement for assistant fire chief, and begins dump truck procurement

The Village Council on July 28 tabled further action on buying a Pierce PUC Rescue apparatus, approved an emergency one-time reimbursement for an assistant fire chief's personal vehicle damage, and held a first reading on procurement of a replacement F-550 chassis and dump bed.
Council discussed plans to replace a 2003 pumper truck and a 2001 heavy rescue with a single Pierce PUC Rescue apparatus. Staff said lead time for the truck had dropped from an estimated four years to about 28—28-30 months and that anticipated quarterly price increases were smaller than initially thought. Council member Burnell moved to table Second Reading Resolution 2025-07-11, and Hurley seconded; the motion passed with six ayes to allow the purchase to be addressed in the 2026 budget process.
Separately, the assistant fire chief reported his personal vehicle suffered damage from falling ash at a fire at St. Johns Church. SS Auto Detailing of St. Henry quoted $739 to wash and clay-bar the affected area; the council agreed to pay 50% of that cost ($369.50). The council first suspended rules (motion by Larger, second Pulskamp) and then approved Emergency Resolution 2025-07-10 to reimburse the employee (motion by Burnell, second Bertke), each action passing 6-0.
The council also held First Reading of Resolution 2025-07-12 to purchase an F-550 chassis from Rush Truck Centers for $75,504 and a dump bed from Kalida Truck Equipment for $64,800 through the state purchasing program, with a combined not-to-exceed amount of $139,304. Replacement of two dump beds was budgeted for 2025; one bed has already been replaced in April.
The Pierce apparatus purchase was explicitly tabled for budget consideration; the emergency reimbursement was approved and will be paid to the employee as recorded. The chassis and dump bed procurement remains at first-reading status and will return for further action according to procurement rules and budget availability.
