Todd Brown, director of Onslow County Parks and Recreation, said rising participation in programs and events has placed strain on existing parks and facilities, prompting a two-pronged focus: improving the condition of current parks and pursuing new infrastructure such as additional rectangular athletic fields and an indoor recreation center. "We have a great parks and recreation system...and every program, every event...is on the rise," Brown said.
Brown described the Board of Commissioners’ focus on comprehensive park improvements and asked residents to "preserve, protect and participate" in planning efforts, encouraging public input on long-range plans. He said the county is prioritizing maintenance of existing assets before adding new facilities but is also advancing plans for new amenities as demand grows.
On operations, Brown previewed the July 4 Freedom Festival at Onslow Pines Park, warning of a likely record crowd and advising attendees to arrive early and be patient. He credited parks staff and volunteers for event planning and traffic management and suggested RecDesk and the parks website as primary ways to find schedules and register for programs.
Brown also shared his background and experience running parks programs in Virginia and described a community-focused approach that balances citizen expectations with available resources.
