Onslow County Cooperative Extension opens Master Gardener training; applications due July 17

Emily Morrison of the Onslow County Cooperative Extension described the Master Gardener volunteer program and its upcoming training. The extension course runs about eight weeks, meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon, and requires a 40-hour volunteer commitment in the first year.
"They do. Yes. The extension gardener handbook...it's basically a textbook," Morrison said, describing the training materials. Morrison said the program offers practical outreach such as a plant clinic, the Discovery Gardens (a four-acre teaching garden), farmer's-market tables and a Bucket Brigade outreach project targeting lower-income residents. She noted the program recently received recognition with the Golden Leaf Keeper award.
Morrison said the class will start on August 18 and run through early October. Interested volunteers must complete an application (available on the Extension website or from the Extension office), submit the $130 fee that covers the handbook and NC State fees, and have their application turned in by July 17 to be considered for the cohort.
Morrison encouraged novices to call the Extension for help and reminded residents that Master Gardener volunteers provide free gardening advice and community education across the county.
