Agency reviews Sypher Road safety improvements over Burr Brook

The Inland Wetlands & Watercourses Agency on June 1 considered an application to repair the culvert where Sypher Road crosses Burr Brook. Howard Pfromer of Jacobson & Associates described the existing 48-inch reinforced concrete culvert and said the town seeks to improve roadside safety by casting an approximately 14-foot reinforced concrete moment slab over the barrel and installing R‑B MASH metal beam rail on the slab and approaches.
The proposal also calls for a modified riprap leak-off and a stormwater infiltration/level spreader basin, and re-pointing the existing stone masonry headwalls. Pfromer told members there would be no equipment placed inside the brook and no observed channel erosion, but that temporary disturbance below the channel could occur while work is performed from below.
Agency members questioned access for construction and discussed an easement with a neighboring property owner; Mr. Pfromer said he will continue pursuing the easement and the Agency will take up the application again at a future meeting.
