The Town of Clinton Mayor and Board of Aldermen voted June 10 to form a planning committee to explore turning the parcel left by the demolition of the 1931 water tower into a veterans memorial and small park.
Marsha Kemp told the board the site sits next to a church and a former fire station and is large enough to host a memorial, a pavilion where the water-tower legs stood, and a small fenced area. She suggested a planning committee composed of veterans, board members and community members and said local veteran-owned businesses and outside veterans organizations could be sources of materials, labor and funding. Kemp said U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow (named in the presentation) has been supportive of veteran-related funding and could be a resource in locating grants.
Mayor Mark L. Kemp described items salvaged from the tower during demolition — including a siren, a section of ladder, part of the banister and the tower funnel— and said those artifacts could be incorporated into a small museum or the memorial setting. Alderman Morris moved to form a planning committee; Alderman Young seconded and the motion passed.
Next steps: formation of the committee and community discussion about design, fundraising and potential grant or private funding avenues. No budget appropriation or construction contract was approved at this meeting.
