Selectmen hear Day Street erosion update; engineers say temporary road likely not worth cost

First Selectman Joe Bellavance said engineers from Earth Retention Systems and consultant Eli Deshaies determined that any interim fix or temporary road at Day Street would likely be short‑lived and a poor use of town funds. Bellavance described the site as continuing to erode and said engineers advised against throwing money at a temporary solution.
Bellavance said staff discussed a limited option to remove part of a stone wall to create a single lane that the highway foreman’s crew could use for snow removal and to control access with a locked gate. Selectwoman Sherri Vogt suggested the gate use a coded lock rather than a keyed padlock. Selectwoman Kayla Burgess said she supports exploring whether a one‑way temporary option could be feasible for at least part of the closure.
Bellavance said he sent the BL Companies report to Eversource and that whatever the town pursues would need Eversource’s partnership. He added that Josh Cingranelli, Region 4 Emergency Management regional coordinator for CT DEMHS, will visit the site the following day with the town’s Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, B. Skene, to assess whether state assistance is available; Vogt said she would like to join that meeting. Bellavance said the board will continue conversations with Eversource and finance staff before committing to any repair.
The board did not vote on a specific repair plan at the meeting; Bellavance described the next procedural steps as a joint review with regional emergency management and follow‑up discussions with Eversource and the highway foreman.
