Cameron Parish School Board approves notice to consider April 18, 2026 property tax renewal election

The Cameron Parish School Board on Oct. 13 approved giving formal notice, in compliance with La. R.S. 42:19.1, that it will meet Nov. 10, 2025, at 5 p.m. at the School Board Office to consider calling an election on April 18, 2026 to renew two ad valorem property taxes currently being collected to support maintenance, improvement and operations of the parish elementary and secondary schools. Charley Lemons, superintendent, presented the item to the board and the motion to give notice carried on a board vote.
Why it matters: Renewals of ad valorem taxes maintain local revenue the district uses for routine operations and capital needs; if the board decides to call the election on Nov. 10, voters would see the renewal on ballots April 18, 2026. The board’s action on Oct. 13 was to set the procedural notice; no election was called at this meeting.
Next steps: The board will meet Nov. 10, 2025, to consider formally calling the election. If the board votes to call the election at that time, detailed ballot language, rates and durations will be provided to the public and posted according to state law.
