Town attorney Graham Arnold explained the legal process the town must follow before demolition: hire an abstractor to determine the last-recorded owner, publish notices seeking the apparent owner, appoint an attorney to represent absent or deceased owners if necessary, and allow the owner a hearing opportunity. If the owner fails to act, the town may perform demolition and place a lien against the property, Arnold said. He emphasized the town must be willing to fund the upfront costs and commit to the full legal process before proceeding.
Board members asked staff to obtain bids or quotes for demolition and bring them to the next meeting; the item was postponed pending that information.
