Police, fire and public-works reports show routine activity; accountant says cash up about $1 million

Police Chief Davis told the Board of Aldermen on Aug. 12 that the department issued 47 citations in July, had seven calls, two arrests and three summons; four tickets were dismissed. The minutes state there are 1,576 outstanding warrants (in-state and out-of-state) and three cases were forwarded to the District Attorney’s office. The minutes also show fines collected by AMS were $3,451.92 and total fines including AMS were $10,389.42. The council accepted the police report by motion.
Fire Chief Beauchamp reported 173 calls through the end of July, including 89 fire/related calls and 84 medical calls; July had 24 calls, including three alarms in the town district, one fire and nine medical calls. The department responded to mutual-aid requests and noted several hydrants that are not working.
Mayor Mark L. Kemp provided the maintenance report covering sewer-pond work, grass cutting across multiple streets and the park, locating and replacing gas meters on Elm and Pine streets and installing a meter on Beech Street, repairing a gas leak on Bradford Lane and Church Street, removing downed trees on Old South Drive, filling potholes, and preparing sandbags ahead of expected flooding. Mayor Kemp also said staff cleaned park facilities for a Community Back to School function that drew about 20 children and 32 adult volunteers for related activities.
Accountant Tim Butler told the council the town’s cash position is about $1 million ahead of last year. He said the sales-tax fund is approximately half the amount from last year because of major repairs — including work on the bridge on Feliciana Drive, Spring Street repairs and guard-rail installation — and a needed repair at the Feliciana Drive/Bank Street intersection where erosion has occurred. Alderman Morris moved to accept the accountant’s report; Alderman Beauchamp seconded and the motion passed.
All three departmental reports were accepted by the council during the meeting; the minutes do not include roll-call tallies for each motion.
