Dr. Thomas Massaro provided the Marblehead Board of Health with an update on local mental-health work on Oct. 8, saying the Marblehead Mental Health Task Force recently met with suicide-prevention advocate Lisa Sugarman and is promoting a new community program called the Walk Talk Collective.
Dr. Massaro announced that a member, Teri McDonough, received a scholarship to attend a Mental Health Leadership program at the Harvard School of Public Health. He said the task force will consult with Swampscott officials and the UMass Boston health-assessment team to better capture local needs and context.
The task force has been awarded two state "best practices" grants totaling $90,000 over two years, Dr. Massaro said; he emphasized the importance of continuing to pursue external funding to support local services. The minutes record these items as part of the community-health update; no formal board action on programming or funding allocations was recorded during the meeting.
Board members noted upcoming community events, including a Jan. 18, 2025 Wellness Fair and an MHD Mental Health 5K on Nov. 3, 2024 at the Boston Yacht Club, as opportunities to engage residents in the task force’s work.
