School board updates medication policy to reflect law requiring naloxone access; staff to train employees

The Caldwell Parish School Board approved an update to its medication-administration policy to comply with a recently enacted state law that requires naloxone (Narcan) be available at each school.
Amy, who presented the change, explained that naloxone reverses opioid overdoses and that the Northeast Delta Human Services Authority has provided free naloxone boxes to the district. "It can be used to save your life," Amy said, describing the drug as a reversal for opioid overdoses and noting the authority will supply two boxes per school (each box containing two doses), providing four doses staged at each campus. She also said Citizens Medical Center has signed standing orders to allow school staff to administer epinephrine (EpiPen) when required and the district has applied for a free epinephrine program.
The policy requires at least one trained staff member per school; presenters urged system-wide refresher training and documentation for all staff so the district can meet the law's training requirements and maintain records of who is certified to administer the medicines. Board members discussed options for video refreshers, online training modules and in-person sign-offs to satisfy the statutory training standard.
The policy revision was approved by the board. Staff will finalize training schedules, maintain standing orders and coordinate with Northeast Delta Human Services Authority and Citizens Medical Center on supply and reporting procedures.
