Board permits septic and well hookup for Valley Baptist Church addition

The Porter County Board of Zoning Appeals approved a variance enabling Valley Baptist Church to connect a proposed addition to the church's existing well and septic system, subject to state and DRC requirements.
Representatives Calvin Schneider and Denny Smith said a water meter installed earlier showed average usage far below the septic system capacity, and they requested permission to connect the addition rather than switch to public water. Staff reported DRC comments asking for verification that the septic drain outlet is open and flowing and that the church perform annual IDEM inspections appropriate for a nonresidential use.
"They asked us to put a water meter on the church... the septic system is set up for 1,600 gallons a day usage, and we're averaging about 112 gallons a day," Schneider told the board. Staff emphasized the state's role in inspecting and approving engineering requirements; the board made a motion to allow the septic and well connection and the motion carried.
The board recorded that final compliance with state permitting and the health-department review is a prerequisite for implementation of the work.
