Board backs study of a consolidated Halifax County parks and recreation authority

Halifax County administrators asked the Board of Supervisors on June 1 to authorize staff to explore the feasibility of forming a consolidated Parks and Recreation Authority covering the county and the towns of Halifax and South Boston. The board voted unanimously to support staff in that feasibility work.
County Administrator Ron Brade said an integrated authority could reduce duplicative operations, improve facility maintenance across jurisdictions, support regional tournament hosting, and better align with the county’s Community Strategic Plan goal of improving quality of life. Brade reported the Town of South Boston had unanimously supported exploration at its May 7 retreat, and town leaders present at a May 13 local government leadership meeting also signaled support.
Supervisor Jeff Oakes moved to authorize county staff to work with the towns on feasibility; the motion passed 8-0. The board did not adopt a formal charter or make structural decisions; staff will return with analysis and recommended governance options if initial feasibility work supports the proposal.
