County approves new pole barn and several facilities contracts, including camera work

Porter County commissioners approved construction of a new pole barn to store county equipment and several related facilities contracts during their Dec. 9 meeting.
Facilities staff described a proposed heated pole barn roughly 60 by 120 feet to replace outdoor storage for tractors, trailers and specialty vehicles including the voters’ bus and public-health vehicle. Staff recommended Jaguar Builders as the contractor based on cost and options; the board approved the recommendation and motioned to move forward, noting some concrete and ancillary work will be carried into next year’s budget.
The board also approved a series of smaller facilities items: block hours for Gatlin Plumbing ($9,500), a Mechanical Concepts plumbing/time-and-materials contract (not to exceed $8,800), painting and minor repairs for the Sheriff’s garage ($19,005.75), painting for an adjacent storage pole barn ($22,750), annual lawn-services contracts for multiple county properties, and a $5,037 VideoTech proposal to relocate basement cameras after flooding. Commissioners discussed camera upgrades for the courthouse and juvenile detention center, noting many cameras are analog and lack zoom capability.
Commissioners said the pole barn will centralize county equipment and free space at other facilities. Staff will process contract paperwork and manage encumbrances and next-year concrete work needed to complete the site.
