Cushing selectmen approve warrants, accept minutes and direct code enforcement on smoke complaints

The Cushing Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Monday to approve Warrant #19 and #20, accept the minutes of the April 14 meeting and to direct Code Enforcement Officer Scott Bickford to investigate complaints that smoke from an outdoor wood furnace on Spear Mill Road is bothering neighbors.

Fireman Darren Hill told the board that firefighters had spoken with the homeowner, who said he would lengthen the furnace smokestack but had not done so. Hill said a Knox County sheriff recommended the town consider drafting a nuisance ordinance if the problem persists. Selectmen discussed contacting the homeowner and having Scott Bickford inspect the site and follow up with a letter.

Selectman Laurie Haynes moved and Selectman Daniel Staples seconded a motion directing Code Enforcement Officer Scott Bickford to check the situation and send a written letter to the property owner; the motion carried 5-0-0. The board earlier approved Warrant #19 and #20 on a motion by Selectman Daniel Staples, seconded by Selectman Robert Worthing (carried 5-0-0), and accepted the April 14 minutes on a motion by Selectman Laurie Haynes, seconded by Selectman Martha Marchut (carried 5-0-0).

The meeting was adjourned on a motion by Selectman Robert Worthing, seconded by Selectman Daniel Staples; the board left at 6:50 P.M.

Why it matters: The board’s directive puts town code staff in the lead to assess whether the furnace presents a local nuisance and whether further action — including an ordinance — is warranted. The town did not adopt any ordinance at this meeting.
