Crescentwood Elementary reports enrollment surge and reading gains, principal says

Stephanie Morang, principal of Crescentwood Elementary, told the board her building far exceeded projected K–5 enrollment after a transition from K–2 to K–5, prompting the school to open additional classrooms and reassign staff.
"We far surpass exceeded that with 80 plus students from our projected enrollment," Morang said, describing how the school added classrooms and staffing to manage growth. She described data-driven instruction, weekly PLCs and coaching cycles for teachers, and targeted literacy interventions that the school runs for students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Morang presented I-Ready reading results showing a 9 percent increase district-reported from fall to winter in students at or above grade level in reading; she said math scores rose about 8 percent over the same period. She said the school’s interventionist conducts progress monitoring roughly every four weeks and that high-dosage tutoring will start the following week.
The principal highlighted family engagement events including a Toys for Tots drive that served more than 120 families, a Black History Month evening with student presentations, and a March reading-month kickoff. She also noted grants that paid for a kindergarten trip to the Detroit Zoo and other funded field trips.
Morang closed by listing upcoming events and testing dates tied to district testing windows; board members praised Crescentwood’s progress and encouraged ongoing family involvement.
