Eastpointe Community Schools forges CTE consortium with South Lake, explores Mcome college partnerships

Eastpointe Community Schools announced a consortium agreement with neighboring South Lake that will let South Lake students take law-enforcement classes at Eastpointe while Eastpointe students gain access to automotive-technology courses at South Lake High School.
"We will be opening up our doors for South Lake High School students to take law enforcement and our students will have access to automotive technology at South Lake High School," Superintendent Gibson told the school board during her superintendent’s report. She said the agreement is part of a district effort to expand career and technical education offerings.
Gibson said the district is also exploring program offerings through Mcome Community College, including welding and HVAC, and is considering how to solve transportation barriers that can prevent students from enrolling. When asked by a board member whether new vans or additional staff would be required, Gibson said district staff are researching funding streams and the availability of an existing transit van at Corno Ford and said the board may see a request related to transportation in coming months.
The superintendent tied the partnership work to the district’s strategic plan and to a separate partnership agreement the district will execute with the state department of education to address lagging graduation data at Eastpointe High School. Gibson said the partnership agreement emphasizes goals on attendance and math and reading proficiency and requires regular updates to the board.
Board members praised the cross-district and college collaborations as ways to reduce barriers to career pathways. Officials did not commit to specific budget allocations for new vehicles or personnel at the meeting and said further budget planning would follow before any purchase or staffing change.
What's next: Gibson said the draft partnership agreement with the state will likely be submitted before March 23 and the administration will return to the board with updates and any formal requests for resources.
