The Gilroy Personnel Commission on July 1 approved a new job description and salary range to establish an assistant city administrator position, a senior executive role intended to serve as the city administrator’s number two.
The Human Resources Director presented the proposal, saying the role is broader than the prior assistant‑level classification and will oversee cross‑departmental areas such as recreation, emergency management, communications and strategic initiatives. The position was reclassified from an existing assistant level and the council previously approved a budget amendment to fund the salary range. "You'll see the wide range and scope of work that the assistant city administrator is expected to perform," the Human Resources Director said during the presentation.
Commissioners asked about how the position differs from the old assistant role and how an incumbent would be placed within the approved salary range. Staff said the job restores a full‑time deputy role that previously existed in 2007–2009 and was eliminated during the 2009 recession. The commission approved the job description and salary range by motion and second (voice vote; tally not specified).

Staff said the city administrator will place any hire within the approved salary range and that the position will support large multi‑department projects, such as potential future capital work that could require voter approval. The commission will next meet on the 27th at 5:30 p.m., when related job descriptions and contract ratification items may also appear on the agenda.
