The Waukewan Watershed Advisory Committee on June 2 approved the prior meeting minutes and outlined plans for public outreach, monitoring and volunteer recruitment ahead of the summer season.
Acting Chair Frank Murphy said the committee is organizing an Educational Outreach event for June 17 at the Community Center, with Steve Landry of the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services scheduled as the featured speaker. Members were asked to arrive at 5 p.m. to help with setup; doors open at 5:30 p.m., and attendees were encouraged to register as noted on the event flyer.
Richard Kosinski described active recruitment for Lake Hosts at the public boat ramp, including outreach through other lake groups and Interlakes High School guidance counselors; several prospects have been interviewed. Murphy reported that Donna Murphy had contacted NH Lakes and will advance $4,000 toward expected Lake Host salary costs, and that the Waukewan Lake Host program had received a $2,400 annual grant from NH Lakes for this year.
Committee members highlighted monitoring work: Frank Murphy, Jamie Irving and Tony Sabutis noted recent VLAP (Volunteer Lake Assessment Program) testing in collaboration with the Water Department. The Water Department has also started an eight-site coliform, turbidity and pH testing protocol, expanding routine monitoring during the season; Frank Murphy and Select Board member Mike Pelczar also noted ongoing educational credentialing achievements among Water Department personnel.
The committee discussed commercial water removal from Lake Waukewan as old business. Signs have been posted near the Water Department area, and the Water Department and DPW are coordinating a central removal site and exploring off-hours and weekend staffing to manage demand.
There were no further formal actions beyond approval of the previous minutes. Members listed upcoming conferences of interest, including the NHDES Source Water Conference and the NH Lakes Congress in Concord.
