Supervisor requests jail cost data; sheriff outlines closure steps and federal inmate revenue option
Summary

Supervisor Chuck Bornhoeft asked the Public Safety Committee on Aug. 5 for information to calculate per-person jail expense reporting and said he wanted greater use of the county website for news and emergency notices that appear on Facebook.
Corporation Counsel Ben Lentendre told the committee the county is not required to create or compile a new record to satisfy the request, but that the open-records request must be responded to under law. The committee discussed how existing records and counsel’s guidance apply to the request; no new record was created at the meeting.
Sheriff Joe Konrath described the administrative and staffing steps the county would need to take if the Marquette County Jail were to close, and he emphasized that the jail's PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) compliance enables the county to house federal inmates and earn revenue through contracts with the U.S. Marshals Service. The discussion was descriptive; the committee did not vote to close the jail or adopt new policy at the Aug. 5 meeting.
