Sheldon Jackson Outreach Center plans window replacement, volunteer builders to install in July

Representatives of the First Baptist Church outlined planned improvements to the Sheldon Jackson Outreach Center at the Jackson City Council meeting on June 16.
Nathan Janzen said First Baptist acquired the former Presbyterian Education Building several years ago and has progressed through remodel phases; the current phase focuses on replacing windows. Janzen said like most of the windows will be donated by Lindsay Windows, with only the large bay windows needing different funding. He said Volunteer Christian Builders will come July 6–18 to install the windows and that volunteers typically travel in campers; the church arranged electrical hookup and sanitation access for the temporary stay.
Janzen described the Outreach Center’s community uses: hosting Family Services events, housing Early Head Start offices, providing space for a music therapist at times, and serving as a venue for receptions and other community gatherings. He said the center prioritizes youth ministry and youth activities but also makes space available to community groups.
Anita Handevidt, identified as the volunteer building administrator, said people should contact her to schedule meetings or events at the center and emphasized the group’s desire to provide an affordable meeting place. Janzen and Handevidt noted two key facility limitations: the building is not fully air-conditioned (they are using portable units), and the second floor is not handicap accessible.
Janzen said volunteers will be on site for about two weeks and the project is temporary; the group hopes community members will identify needs the Outreach Center can address.
Clarifying details: Lindsay Windows is donating nearly all replacement windows; Volunteer Christian Builders will perform installation July 6–18 and will camp on church grounds with arranged electrical and sanitation hookups. The Outreach Center hosts Early Head Start offices and other community programs.
