St. Martinville council adopts $50 administrative penalty for nuisance noncompliance

The ordinance, offered by Councilmember Mike Fuselier and seconded by Councilmember Jonas Fontenette, amends Chapter 14 of the Code of Ordinances by adding subsection (f). That subsection states that failure to, within 10 days of the notice, either abate the nuisance, request a hearing before the City Council to contest the finding, or seek additional time to abate shall result in an administrative penalty of $50, in addition to any other fines or penalties provided by law.
The measure was presented as a tool to encourage timely compliance with city nuisance notices. The minutes record the motion, the second, and that the ordinance was declared adopted on Nov. 18, 2024. Mayor Jason Willis signed the ordinance as provided in the meeting record.
Ordinance 24-14 becomes part of the city code and will apply when the notice-and-opportunity-to-cure process described in the ordinance is followed. The minutes do not specify an implementation date beyond the adoption on Nov. 18, 2024, nor do they include text of related enforcement procedures beyond the added subsection.
