East Hampton agency presses for POCD visioning for brownfields, favors mixed-use at Watrous sites

Town Planner Juliet Hodge told the Town of East Hampton Brownfields Redevelopment Agency on May 18 that the Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD) is progressing slowly and asked the board to set long-term goals for the brownfields section. Hodge said water infrastructure will be important to enable development in the village center and urged members to consider a broad vision rather than only immediate projects.
The agency discussed the blighted properties at 1 and 13 Watrous and members suggested mixed-use redevelopment as the preferred option for those sites. Chairman Ryan Baldassario asked members to compile bullet points summarizing what has been done over the past ten years and what remains to be done for the next ten years; Baldassario said he would collect documents and write-ups and send them to Town Planner Juliet Hodge by the end of the following day.
Members also recommended including renderings in the POCD to show residents potential reuses of brownfield sites. The agency noted it is currently two years into a four-year assessment grant and that the next practical steps would be completing investigations, finishing remediation where required, cleaning up sites, and then rebuilding or adaptively reusing existing buildings when appropriate.
The agency reviewed materials from a recent UConn TAB meeting and asked that suggested changes to the storyboard be sent to Baldassario so he could forward them to TAB for revision. The board did not take formal action on any redevelopment plan at the meeting; members indicated they will continue drafting goals and return the revised brownfields section for review at a future meeting.
The agency adopted the meeting agenda (motion by Ms. Yenkner; seconded by Ms. Watkins) and approved the April 27, 2026 minutes. The board adjourned at 7:37 P.M.
