COA reports membership growth, temporary transport funding and volunteer service levels

At its May 14 meeting, the Town of East Hampton Commission on Aging received a series of operational updates on senior services, transportation, housing and community volunteer programs.
Holly Marrero, Senior Center Director, reported statistics for April 1–May 8, 2026, saying, “Programs continue to show a strong attendance with 30 new memberships.” Beth Angel told the commission that the Xtra mile transportation program will be funded by the state for one more year while a more permanent local solution is researched. Dave McGovern reported one unit available in Chatham and one in Bellwood and said the housing waiting list remains closed but has declined from 75 to 70 applicants.
Dr. Eric Rosenberg and Beth Angel updated the commission on EH Community Cares, reporting that 48 volunteers currently serve 70 members who request services, and said they have ideas to increase participation. Members discussed outreach to older adults who may not use current resources; Commissioner Jean Sundstrom suggested using the upcoming Health and Wellness Expo as an outreach opportunity and said the discussion might evolve into a working group.
Juliette Hodge presented a summary of Plan of Conservation and Development input drawn from focus groups and emphasized that fiscal impact is a major concern for goal development. The COA was encouraged to attend a Visioning Session on June 8 from 6–8 p.m.; the commission plans to discuss its viewpoint at the June meeting and send a statement to the POCD team afterward.
