Commission authorizes trial of electric mower as staff prepares apples-to-apples comparison

The commission reviewed competing quotes for a trail mower and authorized a short trial of an electric model before committing to purchase. Meghan Sullivan presented three gas-powered quotes (United Turf and Equipment $9,866; Ritchie and Clapper $9,859; Casons $9,599). Eric Balles, co-chair of the Environmental Sustainability Committee, reported an updated electric quote of $14,930 after Mass Save incentives (higher than an earlier estimate) and said communities using electric mowers have reported positive operator feedback with an estimated breakeven in three to four years.
DPW’s Jim Hall told commissioners he prefers gas-powered equipment because of historical reliability and concerns about electric mower range and charging logistics in remote locations. Commissioners discussed warranty length, battery replacement costs and long-term reliability. Jonathan DeKock offered to mow trails once in May to give the commission more time for evaluation.
Commissioners voted to have Meghan Sullivan coordinate a trial of the electric mower with DPW and ESC staff and prepare an apples-to-apples cost and performance comparison for the commission to review before making a purchase decision.
