The Tega Cay City Council on April 20 introduced an ordinance to amend FY25/26 household solid-waste fees to reflect a fuel surcharge tied to a diesel fuel price index.
City staff said the surcharge would add approximately $0.24 per customer per month while the diesel index exceeds $4.75 for more than four weeks. The mechanism is automatic: when the index drops back below the threshold for the required period, billing will revert without additional council action. Staff said the change is a pass-through cost from the vendor (Signature Waste) and that the vendor may separately request a contractual cost-of-living adjustment (staff said a 1.5% fee for the next fiscal year has been requested and would start in July).
Staff recommended holding the ordinance’s second reading at the already scheduled budget workshop before May so the adjustment will appear on May bills if approved. Council approved introduction on first reading and will consider the second reading as requested by staff.
