Lawrence County Commission approves consent agenda, bids, appointments and routine items; tables outdoor range resolution

At its December meeting the Lawrence County Commission cleared a package of routine business items and took several votes on bids, appointments and personnel matters.

Key actions approved by voice vote included the consent agenda (items A'E), the annual lease for the County Road 249 radio tower property, the 2026 county holiday schedule (adopting the state schedule), and designation of the EMA director (referred to as Mr. Carlton) as county safety coordinator. The commission appointed Jeremy Swindle to the Narcog Loan Review Committee and awarded the mowing/maintenance bid to Integrity and the road strapping bid to Ozark.

The commission approved creating a Solid Waste enforcement officer job description and directed staff to compile examples from other counties; commissioners noted salary, funding and functional responsibilities must be established before advertising and hiring. The sheriff's office request to use $11,000 in opioid funds to complete payment on a van was approved; the department will cover the majority of the vehicle cost and a grant covers the remainder. Commissioners authorized sale of three surplus sheriff's vehicles.

An aging department staff member's fundraiser trip was approved pending review by ACCA and the county attorney to ensure compliance with policy. The commission reviewed two older solid waste items (a residential cart decal and a proposal from Dr. Woo to inspect individual cans) and approved a motion to proceed with proration and partial billing as the county explores options.

Representative Yarborough asked that a resolution concerning an outdoor shooting range be tabled; commissioners voted to table that item until January so additional information can be provided.

Motions were generally passed by voice vote; the meeting concluded with staff reports, holiday remarks from commissioners and adjournment.
