Crestwood officials weigh adding audio to new bus cameras

Crestwood School District officials said new buses being delivered under a vendor replenishment clause will come equipped with interior and exterior cameras at no additional cost, but the district noted the systems do not record audio. The transportation committee raised the question of whether the district should require audio on bus cameras for future reviews of incidents.

The district representative who announced the camera installation said the vendor agreement calls for replacements at the 10‑year contract mark and that installing both interior and exterior cameras on newly replaced buses will save the district about $25,000. "They're actually going to be installing interior and exterior cameras at no cost to the district as part of our agreement," the representative said.

Board members asked whether audio is included. Administration replied the interior systems do not capture sound. The representative added that, "in the past we were advised not to have audio on them," and that adding audio would require policy changes and explicit communication to families: updates to the student handbook, a change in board policy and coordination with the bus vendor, Reinheimer.

Officials said equipment cost would not be the primary expense; rather, implementing audio would involve a procedural, legal and messaging process. One board member asked the superintendent to consult other superintendents about their practices; administration agreed to gather peer district input and to check with the vendor on contractual steps needed to enable audio for the 2026–27 school year.

No binding vote was taken. The transportation committee closed the discussion and asked staff to return with specifics on vendor agreement language and recommended policy updates.
