Dowagiac superintendent says welding facility cleared for student use; district outlines kindergarten, transportation plans

Superintendent Greg told the Dowagiac Union School Board that the district has obtained a building occupancy permit for its long‑planned welding facility and will begin moving students into the space.
“Last Friday we finally got the building occupancy permit,” Greg said, noting that the district will begin getting enrolled students into the welding lab and is working with instructors to start using equipment and space.
Greg also reviewed several operational items tied to the district’s transition to grade‑level centers. He said kindergarten registration efforts reached 79 families so far, with the district projecting 120–130 incoming kindergarten students, and described the alternate kindergarten registration process used this year at the buildings where students will attend next year. On transportation, Greg said district staff are preparing general routing guidance now but cannot issue exact bus assignments or times until family applications are collected; officials expect much of that routing to be finalized in early August, though some adjustments could continue close to the start of school.
The superintendent told the board that spring testing (SAT, PSAT, M‑STEP) is consuming staff time across buildings and flagged prom night as generally uneventful but said the district may increase supervision at off‑site venues after a small traffic incident.
Greg encouraged the board to visit the new welding facility once student use is underway and said the district will publicize its availability to the community.
