Union City council to pursue ‘Broadband Ready Community’ designation with EACOG’s help

Borough Manager Cindy Wells explained the program, which is intended to encourage internet service providers to expand service by designating municipalities that follow recommended permitting and infrastructure practices. The council voted unanimously to move forward with a public meeting to state the resolution will be passed and to designate EACOG as the borough’s municipal broadband champion.
Wells said the designation creates opportunities for other ISPs to consider serving Union City and that the borough’s permitting practices are within the program’s recommendations. Council did not approve a specific contract or commitment to any particular provider; the action authorizes staff to complete the application process and host the public meeting required by the program.
