Commission supports drafting truck-route ordinance to keep semis off Maple Street near playground

Commissioners discussed a recurring problem with heavy trucks using Maple Street, a local street near a playground and the library. A commissioner reported that semis had begun using Maple Street after construction detours were lifted and said the traffic pattern puts children and local streets at risk.

Commissioners agreed in principle to ask staff to prepare a truck-route ordinance for City Council that would designate appropriate truck routes (for example Fifth Street) and prohibit heavy vehicles on Maple Street, with typical exemptions for deliveries and contractors. Participants discussed signage options, suggesting restrictions such as signage that indicates "10 tons and over not permitted."

Staff stated that truck-route ordinances go to City Council, not planning commission, so the planning commission’s role is to endorse or advise before staff brings a draft to council. The ordinance would allow police enforcement of designated routes. The commission encouraged staff to pursue the ordinance and noted existing street design and maintenance considerations for routes built to handle truck traffic.

Once drafted the ordinance will be reviewed by City Council; staff will advise on enforcement language and any necessary exemptions.
