Dearborn Heights honors special-education teacher who saved choking student

The Dearborn Heights School District #7 Board of Education recognized special-education teacher Daniel McKenna at its Nov. 19 meeting for stepping in to assist a ninth-grade student who was choking.
Board members presented McKenna with a certificate of recognition and thanked him for quick thinking and calm action that ensured the student received immediate care. "Your quick thinking and calm response made all the difference," a board representative said while reading the certificate. McKenna credited students, building security and school counselors for their quick response and emphasized that school training and procedures worked as intended.
McKenna described the scene as frightening but said the students and staff followed protocols: two students ran to the office, security escorted others from the room, and the school medical team and paramedics responded. In a later update, the student received medical follow-up and was diagnosed with a heart condition that had not been known previously; McKenna said he was relieved that the outcome included identification of that health issue.
Public commenter Miss Greer, who said she had worked with McKenna in a special-ed room, praised him at the podium. The board provided a small award package and took a photo with McKenna.
The recognition was included in the meeting’s superintendent report and highlights the district’s emphasis on training and emergency response protocols.
