Denison council discusses sale of Boyer Field amid DNR land-use restriction

City Manager Garcia told the council the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has placed a land‑use restriction on the complex that would complicate any sale or disposal of the property.
Garcia said that, if the City agrees to dispose of the property, it must identify another parcel of comparable size and transfer the DNR restriction to that property to satisfy the DNR’s requirements. Garcia reported that DMU is open to discussing a transfer provided the City pays associated attorney fees, the site remains an outdoor recreation area, and DMU retains a first right of refusal.
Council members did not vote on a sale or transfer during the meeting. Garcia said she will continue conversations with the DNR, DMU and the school district, which had expressed interest in purchasing the bowl and freshman fields.
The discussion made clear that any transfer of the property will require further negotiation, legal review and identification of replacement land acceptable to the DNR before a sale could proceed.
