Border Enterprises, Judge Jose Luis Garca and a fire lieutenant honored at Rio Grande City meeting

The Rio Grande City Commission used part of its June 30 agenda to recognize local individuals and businesses for community service.

Business of the Month: Border Enterprises — Commissioners introduced Border Enterprises Incorporated as the Business of the Month and read a history of the family-owned company’s five-decade service to local farmers, ranchers and families. Owner(s) and staff posed for photos and accepted a congressional recognition presented by the commission.

Citizen of the Month: Judge Jose Luis Garca — The commission named Judge Jose Luis Garca as Citizen of the Month for long service on the bench (19 years as a district judge) and his prior 12 years on the local school board. Judge Garca told the commission he was humbled by the recognition and reflected on a life of public service, adding he would continue to serve “diligently and with the utmost integrity.”

Employee of the Month: Lieutenant Brian (transcript: 'Brian Gad'/'Brian Gel') — The fire chief presented Lieutenant Brian with the employee award, citing his service with the department since 2015 and his promotion through the ranks; Lt. Brian expressed appreciation and surprise at the recognition.

Why it matters: The recognitions highlight long-term local service by a family business, a longtime jurist and frontline public-safety staff; the events included brief acceptance remarks and photo opportunities.

Next steps: Recipients will be photographed and receive plaques as part of the city’s monthly recognition program.
