The Mendota CCSD 289 board discussed a strategy to generate recurring revenue for track maintenance and eventual resurfacing.
Staff reported that early fundraising strategies include holding an annual small event such as a 5K, tightening usage fees for groups that regularly use the facility, and assessing entrance fees for invitational or adult events. Staff estimated those measures could bring roughly $12,000–$16,000 per year, which would not fully pay for a future track resurfacing but could substantially offset costs over time.
Board members asked whether charging teams to participate in routine meets was appropriate; one member said hosting occasional paid Saturday invitationals might be preferable to charging for every regular meet. Staff noted that UV exposure and heavy athletic use typically require resurfacing roughly every 15 years and that less traffic delays wear but does not eliminate long-term maintenance needs.
No formal vote was taken; the discussion was described as providing a planning “shell” for further internal conversations and potential future actions.
